- CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
- Grand Funk Railroad
"Grand Funk"
1970 (USA)
- On Grand Funk's
second LP they got it perfect. This is simple, no-frills, blue collar,
post-Woodstock, pre-heavy metal RAWK. When this one came out they were
well on their way to becoming one of the top groups of the era. Record
company hype went so far as to imply the Funks were "the 70's answer to
the Beatles," who had of course just broken up. Not even close! But
there is something endearing about the empty-headed populism and
lowest-common-denominator fuzztone boogies of the first few GFR albums
that has earned the band a certain amount of critical re-appraisal
lately. (Their later albums after they added a 4th member to play
keyboards are best left in the dustbin of history for the most
part.)
