- CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
- Jefferson Airplane
"After Bathing At Baxter's" 1967 (USA)
- Choosing a classic
album to represent 1967 is a tough one! Ultimately I had to go with the
third Jefferson Airplane album (their second with the classic Grace
Slick lineup), which is my personal favorite of theirs. Initially they
sought Frank Zappa as a producer, and the suite-like structure of The
Mothers' "Aboslutely Free" album seems to have been a key influence.
"Baxter's" was a commercial disappointment after their smash hit
"Surrealistic Pillow" album from earlier in the year, although the very
weird single "The Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil" did very nearly
make the American Top 40.
