- CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE
WEEK
- The Human Instinct "Stoned Guitar" 1970 (New Zealand)
- The
Human Instinct was in some ways a typical example of a "provincial"
heavy band of the late psychedelic era. Their repetoire included
groovy interpretations of popular anglo/american tunes by artists such
as Neil Young and The Kinks, which in some cases were the regional
hit versions of those songs. Like many of the more ambitious
groups from Australia and New Zealand, The Human Instinct spent a
period in London trying to make it big internationally, but ultimately
had little to show for their efforts aside from a few high-profile gigs
opening for more popular British groups. After returning home to
NZ, the group cut three albums in rapid succession -- "Stoned Guitar"
was the second of these and the most impressive of the bunch.
In 1991 the obscure neo-psych noise band Vermonster recorded
a tribute to this album entitled "Instinctively Inhuman"
(consisting of
epic covers of the first two songs on "Stoned Guitar", each expanded to
an
entire side of the record.)
