- CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE
WEEK
- Captain Beyond 1972 (USA)
- Most
self-conscious "supergroups" in rock history were better on paper than
record, and most failed to live up to their hype. While the
latter is probably true of Captain Beyond (they never got famous),
the former is not. This group actually made interesting and
original music, a combination of early 70's proto-metal stylings with
complex song structures and fantasy lyrics from the prog world.
On this particular record the supergroup consists of Deep
Purple's original singer (Rod Evans, who sang Purple's early hit
"Hush"), two guys from Iron Butterfly (Lee Dorman & Larry
Reinhardt ) and Johnny Winter's ex-drummer (Bobby Caldwell.)
They did continue on until 1977 and made two more albums with
ever-shifting lineups, niether of which is as good as their debut
(which originally had a groovy 3D cover!)
