The Modern Lovers "The Modern Lovers"  rec. 1972 (USA)
This band from Boston generated some insider buzz in the early 1970's, which led to recording sessions with famed producers John Cale and Kim Fowley -- but these went unreleased until the first stirrings of punk rock in 1976.  By then the group's Velvet Underground-derived sound and anti-rockstar image were perfect for the times, and the record was a substantial hit in the UK (the Sex Pistols even covered the Lovers' anthem "Roadrunner") and paved the way for "New Wave" back home in the states.  Lead singer & guitarist Jonathon Richman went on to cult fame as a solo artist, while drummer David Robinson co-founded The Cars and keyboardist Jerry Harrison joined Talking Heads just in time for their first album.  (M'waukee native Harrison turns 58 today.)
