The Mahavishnu Orchestra "The Inner Mounting Flame"  1971 (UK/USA/Czechoslovakia/Ireland/Panama)
Think of "jazz fusion" and the slippery funk of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report are probably the first sounds that come to mind.  Well, Mahavishnu Orchestra was an entirely different thing -- more like Frank Zappa's band playing speed metal!  It's no wonder this unit is probably the prog rock fan's favorite jazz group.  Another interesting thing about Mahavishnu is that all five members of the original line-up came from different countries:  leader John McLaughlin is British, keyboardist Jan Hammer is Czech, bassist Rick Laird is Irish, Billy Cobham is Panamanian, and violinist Jerry Goodman, formerly of jazz-rock group The Flock, is the  American.
