"Anywhere" by Flower Travellin' Band (1970)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Flower Travellin' Band  "Anywhere"  1970 (Japan)
Since this week's show features cover songs, for the CAOTW I have chosen one of the most radical and bizarre cover albums of all time.  Flower Travellin' Band was conceived as Japan's answer to the heavy rock of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and like many Japanese groups of their day (and groups from the non-English speaking world in general) they began their musical career by covering popular Anglo-American songs.  But just because they do familiar tunes like "House of the Rising Sun", King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man", Muddy Waters' "Louisiana Blues" and Black Sabbath's titular song, don't think you've heard anything like this before!  For example, the rhythms and vocals of "Black Sabbath" are all bent out of shape (like "free jazz" only with metal!), they make the chord progression to "Rising Sun" significantly more complicated than the popular version,  and their version of "Blues" is so far removed from the delta tradition that it's often mistaken for an original composition.  Plus, they're butt nekked on motorcycles on the album cover, and their singer "Joe" had a rainbow colored afro!  FTB released three more albums under their own name, and in recent years their work has been rediscovered by heavy music fans around the globe.  (Julian Cope borrowed the cover art from this record for the cover of his recently published Japrocksampler book.)
