New Orleans pianist Mac Rebennack donned face paint and feathers and took on the guise of "Dr. John, The Night Tripper" in 1968 with this spectacular debut album.  Steeped in African voodoo chanting, sheets of percussion, creepy horn arrangements reminiscent of Sun Ra, and The Night Tripper's distinctive bayou blues spell casting, Gris-Gris is a totally unique "psychedelic" record that Atlantic boss Ahmet Ertegun initially was reluctant to release because of its supreme weirdness.  Rebennack/Dr. John's music career continues up through the present day, though since the early 1970's his muse has gone in a more traditional "Big Easy blues 'n' boogie" direction (an idiom of which he is an acknowledged master.)
