Former Impressions leader Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack for the 1972 "blaxploitation" flick Superfly is a rare example where a film soundtrack not only stands as a magnificent piece in its own right, it's actually much better than the film that goes with it!  Curtis was reportedly heartbroken when he saw what a sleazy piece of trash he had been laboring on (he has a cameo appearance in the film, lip-synching one of his songs in a club).  To the extent that there is much "drama" in the film, it's all due to the powerful emotional conflicts laid out in Mayfield's lyrics, and not so much the action on the screen!  "Freddie's Dead" and the title track were both major hit singles, and indeed "Superfly" spawned a minor dance craze (see for example, the Young Holt Limited Plays Superfly LP and even the cheesy moog version on Synthesonic Sounds' Moog At The Movies) -- making this Mayfield's commercial as well as artistic peak.
