"For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night" by Caravan (1973)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Caravan  "For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night"  1973 (UK)
Caravan was one of the key "Canterbury scene" bands from Great Britain in the 1960's, most notable for Pye Hasting's whimsical and distinctive tunes and voice, and the superlative keyboard playing of David Sinclair.  In fact it could be said that Sinclair's keyboards are the single most identifiable element of the whole "Canterbury sound" (and why not, he was also later in such notable "Canterbury" groups as Robert Wyatt's Matching Mole as well as the supergroup Hatfield & The North!)  I keep putting "Canterbury" in quotes however, because most of the groups from this so-called scene actually had very little to do with that town and never lived there.  (Although ironically Caravan is one of the few groups that actually did have roots in that city.)  Anyhoo, For Girls Who Grow  was their fifth LP, and probably the most hard-rockin' in their whole discography -- though still very prog and very whimsical.
Among Caravan's most memorable songs is the cheesy/adorable "Golf Girl" from their most acclaimed album, 1971's In The Land Of Grey & Pink.  "Magic Man" is a song from their debut album that really shows the group's flower-power roots.  But for the motherlode of Caravan video action, here's a 1973 performance from the era of this album -- part one, part two and part three  -- progtastylicious!
