Caravan  "In The Land Of Grey And Pink"  1971 (UK)
Caravan is one of the most central and quintessential of the so-called "Canterbury scene" of British prog bands in the early 1970's (the other big one being The Soft Machine), and this is their most popular album.  The "Canterbury" style is usually described as a mix of classical, jazz and psychedelic rock riffs with "whimsical and very English" singing, often displaying a surreal or goofy sense of humor.  In The Land Of Grey And Pink is all those things, in spades.  One side contains lovely, silly, adorable little tunes and the other is a 22 minute epic suite called "Nine Feet Underground."
Caravan's most high-profile video appearance seems to be this performance of the ridiculous yet unforgettable "Golf Girl", from Top Of The Pops.  Two contemporary British bands with eagerly awaited new albums coming out this year are Earthling Society and Cornershop.
