This week's classic album is by one of the greatest of the "krautrock" bands.  Originally founded on a commune, Amon Düül soon split into two groups -- the original crew (without the number at the end of their name) sounded like a bunch of hippies on acid making noise in a recording studio (which was apparently what they were), while the "second" version of the band concentrated on musicianship and became one of Germany's most popular groups of the era.  The sound of AD2 is a unique and diverse amalgamation of acid rock, free improvising, heavy metal, folk music, and just about everything else that was in the air in the early 1970's (one critic described them as sounding like "Led Zeppelin without the blues influences", which is not really so far off.)  Tanz Der Lemminge was their third release, and the second of three double albums they recorded (their other two doubles, Yeti (1970) and Made In Germany (1975), have already been classic albums).  Featuring three sidelong progressive jam suites, Lemminge is arguably their most far-out album of all.
Here's AD2 on German TV around the time this album was released: "Between The Eyes".  And here's one of their "Zeppelinesque" (minus the blues) rockers, "Eye-Shaking King".  Those first two clips feature the group's main singer Chris Karrer, while their "second singer" Renate Knaup is featured on "Surrounded By The Stars".  Also on the show this week:  Neil Young discusses "A Treasure", the latest in his series of archival concert releases (featuring his International Harvesters band of 1984-85).
