"Kings of Oblivion" by Pink Fairies (1973)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Pink Fairies  "Kings of Oblivion"  1973 (UK)
Pink Fairies are one of the greatest "unsung" groups in rock history.  Marginally popular on the underground festival circuit in Britain at the beginning of the 1970's, the band never really achieved any notable "success", though they did leave behind three classic LP's which today seem like the missing link between the hippie and punk scenes.  Kings of Oblivion was the third and final of these albums, and consists of ambitious yet dirty gutter rock -- perhaps a bit like a UK version of Iggy & The Stooges Raw Power album (another pre-punk masterpiece that came out the same year).   The Fairies never kept the same lineup for any two albums -- the only constant members were the rhythm section of Russell Hunter (drums) & Duncan Sanderson (bass), joined on this record by a notorious guitar wizard named Larry Wallis -- making it the only true "power trio" album by this group.
The only footage of Pink Fairies from the 1970's that I could find was this grainy un-synched video of "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout" and "City Kids" from 1975 (by an all-star reunion lineup featuring all five key members:  Wallis, Sanderson and Hunter along with returnees Paul Rudolph and Twink).  Here are some fan videos for "Chambermaid", (from Oblivion) and a silly lipsynch for "Do It" (the classic single from their debut album).  Larry Wallis went on to co-found Motorhead with Lemmy Kilmister (though he quit before their first album was released), and then became a producer and session musician for legendary punk label Stiff records -- here he is performing his late-70's single "Police Car".  The most obscure clip my research turned up this week is this pre-Fairies performance by UFO featuring Larry Wallis on guitar in 1972.  (Wallis wasn't in that band long enough to play on any of their albums -- he was also briefly in Blodwyn Pig, but never played on any of their albums either!)
