The Jimi Hendrix Experience  "Axis: Bold As Love"  1967 (USA/UK)
Jimi Hendrix would have turned 69 this Sunday, so our classic album this week is his second LP (which contains the song "If 6 Was 9" . . . for his 69th birthday, gettit?)  Although I adore Jimi's first and third albums with The Experience to death, I must admit the case can be made that Axis was truly his finest moment in the recording studio.  The songs are much more nuanced and complex than the garage-soul stompers on his debut album, and the sound is much more focused than on his sprawling double album.  Although every Hendrix album is rather deeply psychedelic, Axis has a quintessentially technicolour flower-power vibe to rival anything recorded in 1967.
Axis was an immaculately producded studio album, and he really didn't play these songs live in concert very often -- though the most frequently performed was "Spanish Castle Magic".  Here's some very rare (if choppy) film of Hendrix in 1968 jamming on the garage rock classic "Gloria", and a typically virtuostic guitar solo.
