LOVE IS...
The LOVE Show
"Love To Love You Baby" by Donna Summer (1975)

CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Donna Summer  "Love To Love You Baby"  1975 (USA/Germany)
The theme of this week's show is "LOVE", so for our classic album we're going a bit outside of the usual psych-prog-underground style.  "Love To Love You Baby" was Donna Summer's first international hit, and the full length album version clocks in at a proggy 17 minutes.  This early disco classic was also produced in Munich, Germany by Giorgio Moroder, a pioneer of electronic pop (right around the time Kraftwerk scored their first big hit "Autobahn").  So perhaps one might argue this track is the missing link between the Krautrock and Disco movements!  Indeed, "disco" itself can be thought of as little more than a spacy, hi-tech, drugged-out "sixties hangover" version of soul music.
Here's a short clip of Donna performing "Love To Love You Baby", though the cosmic impact of the epic album version (played on the show this week) really can't be captured in a mere 3 minutes of moaning and groaning.  The next Summer-Moroder smash was an even more groundbreaking track, a technopop synth workout called "I Feel Love" that rivals the records Kraftwerk was making at the time.   (Moroder had an even earlier synth-based hit in 1972, the catchy "Son Of My Father", which he released under the name "Giorgio").   But aside from the technically interesting facts about "Love To Love You Baby", the reason it was so popular has a lot to do with how SEXY the track is.  Another artist of the 1970's who was known for sexy dance music was Barry White, whose orchestrated moanin' and groanin' was largely a reworking of the more innovative Isaac HayesAnother artist we had to play this week is the band called . . . LOVE!
