"Os Mutantes" by Os Mutantes (1968)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Os Mutantes  "Os Mutantes"  1968 (Brazil)
Os Mutantes ("The Mutants") may be the most famous pop group ever to come from Brazil -- I can't say I know a whole lot about the Brazilian scene, but during the 1960's they seem to have been the local equivalent of The Beatles, and were among the most important exports of the "Tropicalia" (ie, "tropical psychedelia") movement, along with famous solo artists like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze and Gal Costa.  Though Mutantes also had a wacky and silly stage presence which reminds me of the Monkees, and were fond of severely cut-and-pasted studio productions that recall Frank Zappa's early work.  (Most of their songs are in Portuguese, but I gather the lyrics also tend to be quite satirical).  All in all, they were a nearly perfect embodiment of the rule-breaking energy of sixties pop music, made even more fascinating because it all went down so far from the trendy scenes in California and London.  In recent years, founding brothers Arnaldo and Sergio Dias Baptista reunited to perform and record a new album as Os Mutantes (which made the Kosmik Radiation Best Of 2009 list) -- meanwhile the third of the original members, Rita Lee, has been one of Brazil's most popular entertainers ever since she left the group in 1972 (supposedly she has sold sixty million records worldwide!)
Os Mutantes appeared for the cameras a few times -- here's some nice footage of the group live on French TV in 1969, and a live performance of "Caminhante Noturno" (in English! With an orchestra! And they're wearing the same costumes as on their second album cover, which means that picture is probably a still from this film.)  Next, here's some home movie type footage of Mutantes at Disneyland in 1970?  And finally, a clip of the reunited Os Mutantes in 2006.
