Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" 1989 (USA)

Adam Yauch -- the rapper known as MCA -- passed away from cancer this week at age 48. The Beastie Boys were always an anomaly in the hip hop community: there was no role or model for "white kids who rap" in the 1980's, so they blazed their own trail and managed to make great art in a "black music" field without ever really trying to "sound black". The hallmarks of their style are their distinctive Brooklyn-Jewish accents, their riotous clowning, and the fact that they played instruments on their albums. Before going rap, they were originally a hardcore punk band, but as they forged their new direction they somehow turned into a classic funk band. Their first three albums were all quite different from each other, and each is a minor masterpiece in its own way. The most acclaimed of these is probably the second, Paul's Boutique, which features some of the densest and most innovative (even downright psychedelic) sampling ever laid down (including nontraditional sources like The Beatles and Pink Floyd, as well as the expected Sly and Curtis Mayfield riffs).
For videos, first up here is the band performing the worst lipsynch ever to "Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" on American Bandstand, and the boys on Soul Train doing "Brass Monkey". Though the years have been kind to its reputation, when Paul's Boutique was released it was considered a major commercial flop -- the anachronistic video for the single "Hey Ladies" may have been boldly cinematic, but it certainly wasn't "hip" at the time. Next, a live performance with instruments that merges their punk roots with their energetic stage goofing: "Sabotage". Finally, from their most recent album, a video for "Make Some Noise", a sequel to "Fight For Your Right" starring Hollywood cool guys Seth Rogen, Danny McBride and Elijah Wood as the Beasties!
