"The Grateful Dead" by The Grateful Dead (1967)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Grateful Dead  "The Grateful Dead"  1967 (USA)
It's time for the third annual installment of the Grateful Dead Audience Recording Special.  For the first two years, we had tasty "official live albums" to go with the tasty live audience tapes, but have now inducted all of the best of those.  So we go back to the beginning:  the debut album, recording in a few hours in the studio and with most of the jammy bits edited out, this record is often described as the bastard stepchild of Deaddom.  At the time, it didn't sell particularly well compared to other Heavy Frisco bands, and they remained not just a cult band, but a highly localized cult band with few followers outside of Northern California (the refrain then was the same as it always has been: "you just have to see them live!")  Basically, in 1967 they had no idea how to make a record and so relied on their producer (a guy they hired because he had been an engineer for The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction"!)  But even more importantly, they really hadn't developed their own sound or image or ethos yet.  But by 1969 and the release of their first live album, things had begun to snowball . . . so this week on the show we're focusing on concert recordings from that pivotal year.  Tunes from Aoxomoxoa, Live/Dead and Workingman's Dead played live on stage BEFORE they were recorded in the studio, let alone released to the publc!
Here are the dorks in 1969 playing live at the Playboy Mansion to promote their third studio album (according to legend they dosed the drinks, including Hef's).  Next up: VHS tape of a 1970 performance on PBS.  Finally, The Pig sings "Hard To Handle".
