"PTOOFF!" by The Deviants (1967)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Deviants  "PTOOFF!"  1967 (UK)
A group called The Deviants who named their first album after the sound of spitting?  Perhaps this would have been unsurprising for a UK group in 1977, but these Deviants came along ten years before that.  Led by writer/raconteur Mick Farren (a bit of a British John Sinclair type, only more musical) and including the nucleus of future underground legends The Pink Fairies (Russell Hunter & Duncan Sanderson, later joined by Paul Rudolph for the third Deviants album), The Deviants were a seminal group in the development of the UK underground.  Their combination of shocking subject matter ala the Mothers and Fugs with goony blooz rock that any idiot could play and Farren's perpetually adolescent whine basically makes them the first British punk rock band!
I don't think there are any videos of The Deviants in action (they were seriously underground and had "no commercial potential" as the saying goes) -- so here's a fan clip for "I'm Coming Home" (which seems like a psychedelicized version of Van Morrison's "Gloria") from this album.  And I did find this non-musical clip from the 1960's of legendary DJ John Peel interviewing Mick Farren.  Finally, a charming singalong from their second album with the antisocial title "Let's Loot The Supermarket" -- naturally enough, Farren did a fully punked up remake of this song in 1977.
