As
the kosmik time machine travels through fifty years of heavy
progressive psychedelic and underground rock, we pause in the year 1972
for a Europrog classic. Yes is perhaps the most successful and globally
popular band from the golden age of progressive rock, a supergroup of
superambitious supermusicians. Although their first 1972 release Fragile
seems to get more attention (at least in America, where it was there
commercial breakthrough), the album they released later that year is
even better. Consisting of just three tracks, including the sidelong
titular number, Close To The Edge is the group's highwater mark -- their next release was the overdone double album Tales From Topographic Oceans, then after that they did a polarizing jazz album, then settled into a long slow decline of revolving band members.
