- Soundgarden "Badmotorfinger" 1991 (USA)
This
week, another classic from the seminal year 1991: the dawn of "grunge",
aka "The Year Punk Broke". Seattle was hot, and one of the first and
most popular groups to break out of that scene was Soundgarden. And why
not? They had the grungy thing going on, which is to say they are
deeply indebted to ever-popular 70's heavy guitar classic rock (Zep,
Sab, KISS) plus had a very pretty lead singer (to steal fans from the
dying 80's hair metal scene). One of the least punk of the grunge bands
(like metalish peers Alice In Chains, they had old school musicianly
chops), Soundgarden hit their commercial apex with 1994's Superunknown album (featuring top 10 neo-psychedelic smash "Black Hole Sun"), though my favorite of their albums is the previous Badmotorfinger, which sounds like Sabbath on speed fronted by an emo-Dio (no swords and sorcery here bub). |
