"...For The Whole World To See" by Death (1975/2009)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Death  "...For The Whole World To See"  rec. 1975, rel. 2009 (USA)
The band called Death began as Rockfire Funk Express around 1970, when the three brothers who make up the group were just teenagers. At some point the eldest brother, guitarist David Hackney, turned his sibs on to the heavy sounds of Alice Cooper, The Who, Zeppelin, Queen and Sabbath and concocted the extraordinary idea of calling the group DEATH (cuz what is heavier than death?) They recorded demos in hometown Detroit around 1973-75, the most polished of which were eventually released in 2009 on this week's classic album -- sadly, almost a decade after David Hackney died from cancer. The sound of Death was way ahead of its time: their fast-and-hard two-minute anthems of alienation would have fit right in around 1977-1980 when punk rock was all the rage, and in some ways they are the missing link between Raw Power and Bad Brains. The Hackneys continued to soldier on in musical obscurity up until about 1992, including periods as a gospel rock band (The 4th Movement) and a reggae group (Lambsblood, started in Vermont by younger bros Bobby on bass and vocals and Danis on drums). Assorted recordings from three decades have now appeared on this and two additional albums recorded long ago by the original members of Death:  Spiritual-Mental-Physical (2011) and III (2014). With the belated attention the group has received (including a moving 2013 documentary called A Band Called Death), Bobby and Danis have even toured with a 21st century line-up and I wouldn't be surprised if they were working on a brand new Death album! (UPDATE: and two months after I wrote this, Death has released a brand new 2015 album called N.E.W.!
