"Heavy" by Iron Butterfly (1968)

Iron Butterfly "Heavy"  1968 (USA)
Recorded at the end of 1967 and released in January 1968, Iron Butterfly's debut album Heavy is a seminal record in the development of psychedelic and, well, "heavy" music. Although there is still much flower power and hipster posing to be found here, they were also setting new standards in volume and mass (that's the IRON) while incorporating delicate classical-inspired baroque touches (the BUTTERFLY). For the group's follow-up In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (also 1968), everyone but the drummer (Ron Bushy) and singer/songwriter/organist (Doug Ingle) "either quit or was fired", yet the resulting record was a sensational best-seller with the 17 minute long title track yielding a radio hit single (minus the epic "trippy" solos). Anyhoo, getting back to their debut record: it came out the same week as the debut by Blue Cheer, and them was the two loudest bands in the universe at that point. The following year, Led Zeppelin (whose name also is based on a paradox of light and heavy) turned the page on those groups and Iron Butt's short time in the spotlight was done.
