CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK Metallica "Kill 'em All"  1983 (USA) Today is the 30th anniversary of the death of Clifford Lee Burton, who was the heart and soul of American thrash metal. Therefore our CAOTW is the album that launched the band Metallica and thrash metal itself. Once upon a time radio was dominated by MTV poptarts devoid of danger, excitement, and largely the ability to play musical instruments. There was a vibrant underground music scene throughout the entire 1980's, including the "post-punk" indie rock world (back then we still called it "punk"), the dawn of hip-hop, and a resurgence of uncool denim-and-leather 1970's hard rock, better known as Heavy Metal. Somewhat in the manner of the beboppers who came along after the death of swing bands, the thrash metal scene took the previous blueprint and made it infinitely faster and harder. Metallica was the band that made the biggest bang, inspiring legions in their wake as every release brought them new fans, culminating in Grammy awards, multiplantinum sales, billion dollar tours, movies . . . and eventually haircuts and fights with Napster. But if Cliff had lived there is NO WAY he would have cut his hair (hell, he still wore bell bottoms in 1986!) Also: WORT is having their fall PLEDGE DRIVE!
