The Doors' debut album was one of the biggest classic rock albums of 1967, producing one of the most popular songs of the decade, the immortal #1 smash "Light My Fire". And that is a great track; the Doors version clocks in at over 7 minutes and includes a Coltrane-inspired modal interlude which is certifiably "very groovy." The rest of the album is loaded with tracks that would dominate classic rock radio playlists up until this very day: "Crystal Ship", "Soul Kitchen", "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)" - basically 8 out of 11 tracks on this record are ones you've heard a million times. And then there is the end, which is "The End": the twelve minute Oedipal jazz-raga deathtrip which became the soundtrack of the greatest opening montage of 1970's cinema (of course I mean Apocalypse: Now). But beyond the "timeless smash hit" qualities of this particular record, it's worth noting a couple very significant things about The Doors. Firstly they and The Velvet Underground basically invented the bad-trip bummer "dark psych" style, which also makes them the first Goths (dig the black starkness of their unsmiling album cover). Secondly epic songs, dramatic poetical lyrics and high fallutin' concepts like "The Lizard King" basically make them pioneers of progressive rock, although nobody ever seems to consider The Doors a prog band.
