This is classic album of the week #700! Scott Walker (birthname Noel Scott Engel) was a singular figure in the music worlds of the 20th and 21st centuries. His records from the sixties were utterly unique: "Tony Bennett on acid" is about the best description I've heard (or maybe Engelbert Humperdinck doing the dirtiest Velvet Underground songs?) Most of his music from the 70's was easy listening and country drivel, and by the 80's he was an obscure forgotten figure who managed to release a weird and unpopular album every 10 years or so. His comeback began in 2006 with the unclassifiable and brilliant music of The Drift (the KR show's #1 album for that year). The next after that was Bish Bosch, which is not quite as musically ambitious as The Drift, but on the plus side Scott's singing is much stronger than his previous record (which had been his first recording after 11 years off), and it's also his funniest album ever. The centerpiece is a 20-minute long avant-garde insult comedy rant with a jibberish title (I think my favorite lyric might be "Norsemen do not eat the big pink mint!" but the whole thing is bonkers). Scott only made one more album of songs following this one, and it was another monumental work. His final album was a movie soundtrack of peculiar (but I think pretty great) orchestra music with no vocals.
