WORT-FM's winter pledge drive begins this week, so ye olde Kosmik Radiation show presents the eighth edition of "The Best Of The Classic Albums Of The Week" featuring PSYCHEDELIC SOUL!  There were two key albums that launched this groovy hybrid of R&B and acid rock: the first was Isaac Hayes' 1969 masterpiece Hot Buttered Soul for the Memphis-based Stax label.  The second was Norman Whitfield's fully psychedelicized Temptations reboot which is this week's new induction into the CAOTW hall of fame.  Before they became turned on day-glo hippies, The Temps were one of the famous Motown label's signature groups (they even made albums paired with that label's top girl group: the immensely popular Diana Ross & The Supremes).  The Temptations were perhaps the ultimate example of the "sharply dressed black male vocal group that does fancy dance steps" trend which was in full bloom at the time (though they built on the smooth foundation provided by earlier Motown superstars The Miracles, whose lead singer Smokey Robinson was also the Temps' producer and main hit writer in the early 1960's).  Eventually the combination of Whitfield and Temptations became acrimonious (the singing group understandably wanted more focus on vocals instead of psychedelic production tricks -- and also more ballads).  But during the years 1969-73, Whitfield was one of the most creative producers in America, and combined with The Temptations' superb vocals made for some of the freakiest (and funkiest) hits (and sprawling 15-minute album tracks) of the first brief flowering of "psychedelic soul".
