National Health was the last group of the "Canterbury scene", Britain's charmingly British prog-rock movement of the 1970's; they debuted in 1977 and their record hit the shops just as The Clash and Sex Pistols were taking over. Thus the band has always been somewhat overlooked, though they are a fine supergroup in the tradition of Hatfield and the North - in fact, NH is basically a continuation of H&N: both groups include Phil Miller on guitar (also Matching Mole), Dave Stewart on keys (also Egg) and Pip Pyle (also Gong) on drums. Just swap bassists (Caravan's Richard Sinclair in Hatfield for Neil Murray in Health) and add a second keyboardist (Alan Gowen) and there you have it: National Health. Consisting of a pair of mostly instrumental sidelong suites (aided by occasional female guest vocals), the first of the three National Health basically just picks up right where Hatfield left off. Which is a lovely place to be (and decidedly un-punk in the era of punk, which perhaps makes National Health the biggest punks of all?!?)
